“So,” Hayden began with a long, drawn-out sigh. “You’re staying late? To train Ms. Sugar and Spice?”
“Her name is Ava, and I’m not really training her. We’re just sparring a little,” I replied with a nod.
I’d asked her purely on a whim and had been ecstatic she’d agreed to come over. “She needs to learn to protect herself.”
“True, true,” he agreed and locked the front door after turning off the small neon sign hanging in the window that told the public we were open. “So, are you two a couple now?”
“No,” I pause, frowning. “Maybe? I really don’t know.”
“Well, either you are or you’re not,” he shrugged.
“We’ve had one date, Hayden,” I rolled my eyes, “Don’t be getting any ideas.”
“Who me?” he asked innocently.
“No, not you,” I scoffed, playfully. Hayden meant well, and I knew he wanted me happy. “She’s going to be here soon. Don’t you have somewhere to be?”
“Kicking me out, huh?” Hayden teased.
“Bye,” I waved as he walked toward the locker room, shaking his head.
It was eight, and I wasn’t the least bit nervous about training her. I’d already seen how careless she could be when alone. Yes, granted, Cooper’s Cove was a safe town. There hadn’t been a murder here since before I arrived, but that didn’t mean anything.
Eric had recently mentioned an increase in break-ins and drug violations in town. He didn’t say it, but I could tell he was concerned about a few of the shadier residents. It was the way of the current world, though. There wasn’t going to be a perfect place to live, and even with the heightened security protocol I had installed in my home and business, there was always a chance of someone trying to cause a problem. We’d already seen it happen to Ava.
“I’m out of here,” Hayden announced as he hefted his gym bag up over his shoulder. “Have fun.” His saucy wink left me chuckling as I locked him out.
Checking my watch, I groaned at the time.
Ten minutes past the top of the hour.
Grabbing Bob, I brought him to the middle of the mat and positioned him for our private training session. My hands were sweaty, and I wanted to chalk it up to the adrenaline I felt before training.
I wasn’t nervous… at all.
The dummy stared back at me, his blank expression taunting me to deny my feelings for Ava. Bob wasn’t amused with my pacing, either. The only thing that stopped me was a soft knock on the door.
“Of course, she’s early,” I mumbled as I crossed the blue mat on the floor.
Her hazel eyes peered through the glass, and I felt my heart squeeze. Ava was staring at me again with so much trust. I tightened my shaking fingers around the deadbolt and twisted the lock, opening things up before I did something stupid like run away.
“Hi,” she breathed.
“Come on in,” I urged and pushed the door open wide enough for her to be able to pass by without bumping into me. She still carried the scent of her sugary treats.
